The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) has expressed optimism regarding the Union Budget’s provisions, which are expected to significantly enhance the state’s maritime sector. With a robust foundation in shipbuilding, Gujarat is poised for rapid growth supported by initiatives such as coastal shipping, shipbuilding, and infrastructure development as outlined in the Budget.

Dr. Ajay Kumar, the GMB’s vice-chairman, highlighted that the 2026-27 Budget catalyzes India’s maritime framework by emphasizing port-led growth and sustainable logistics. This focus aligns perfectly with Gujarat’s aspirations as a premier maritime hub, especially given its extensive coastline and operational non-major ports.

The Budget also introduces the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme, aimed at boosting the share of coastal shipping and inland waterways in freight movement from 6% to 12% by 2047. With 10% of cargo currently transported via coastal routes, Gujarat demonstrates significant experience in managing such logistics.

Moreover, the allocations for shipbuilding and defence infrastructure are crucial for Gujarat, which hosts major facilities like Pipavav. The GMB plans to develop multiple shipbuilding clusters and enhance logistics efficiency across the state, fostering port-led industrialization.
