IMU Hosts Consultation to Advance Indian Ship Technology and Innovation

The Indian Maritime University (IMU) convened a strategic consultation on the proposed Indian Ship Technology (IST), drawing participation from government officials, shipyard leaders, and international technology partners. Dr. Malini V. Shankar, Vice Chancellor of IMU, highlighted the need to revive the National Ship Design Research Centre (NSDRC) to support India’s shipbuilding objectives. Prof. K.M. Shivakholundu discussed the differences between India’s maritime innovation landscape and that of China, while outlining IST’s mission.

Senior officials, including Rajesh Kumar Sinha and Venkatapati S, emphasized IST’s alignment with national initiatives like MIV 2030, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, and MAKV 2047. They underscored the importance of collaboration and infrastructure to achieve these goals. Industry representatives from prominent shipyards expressed their expectations for R&D, indigenous design, and digital innovation.

Technology insights were contributed by experts from various firms, including TAI Engineers and ANSYS, all expressing their commitment to the ISTC’s objectives. The consultation concluded with a presentation on the feasibility of a Software as a Service (SaaS) model in ship design, reasserting IST’s potential as a national hub for innovation and coordination in maritime technology.
