The Indian Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) has announced plans to establish the Indian Maritime Centre (IMC), a new unified platform for the country’s maritime industry. The IMC will serve as a think tank for policy formulation and industry recommendations, aiming to strengthen India’s presence in the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and global maritime forums.
Key objectives of the IMC include enhancing India’s participation in international maritime activities, fostering a strong domestic maritime sector through coordinated efforts, organizing flagship events to promote the Indian maritime industry globally, providing expert analysis for sustainable growth, facilitating collaboration among industry stakeholders, and creating a funding pool to support industry initiatives, including startups.
Shri TK Ramachandran, Secretary of the MoPSW, highlighted the IMC’s role in promoting collaboration, innovation, and policy advocacy for sustainable growth and elevating India’s stature in the global maritime community. The IMC will be housed in a building at the Indian Maritime University’s Mumbai campus, with a Task Force already in place to oversee its establishment and operations through various subgroups focused on different aspects of the initiative. Meetings have been held to progress the IMC’s development and implementation.
