On August 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s commitment to bolster Fiji’s maritime security through training and equipment support during a joint press conference with Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in New Delhi. Modi emphasized the importance of defense and security cooperation, mentioning an action plan designed to enhance mutual efforts in cybersecurity and data protection.
Both leaders expressed a united front against terrorism, recognizing it as a global challenge. Modi highlighted Fiji’s strategic role in the Pacific and its significance as a hub for regional cooperation, supporting a free and secure Indo-Pacific. He welcomed Fiji’s participation in India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, stating, “Our aspirations sail in the same boat.”
Additionally, Modi revealed plans for medical initiatives in Fiji, including the construction of a 100-bed super specialty hospital in Suva and the establishment of affordable healthcare facilities like dialysis units and Jan Aushadhi centres, reinforcing the commitment to improving health outcomes. He reflected on the broader collaboration established through the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation, aiming to strengthen ties across the Pacific region, promoting a resilient and prosperous community.
