India is set to expand the operational concession of the DP World container terminal at Nhava Sheva, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted operations and fostering commercial growth at the country’s busiest container port. The Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT), one of the port’s first private terminals, is included in this expansion. Currently, DP World’s concession, established in the late 1990s, extends until 2028, with industry sources indicating that authorities are considering an early renewal to secure investments and enhance cargo efficiency.
This initiative follows a significant milestone in April 2025, marking two decades of collaboration between JNPA and DP World. The terms of the agreement include a Rs. 705 crore settlement by 2028. Analysts argue that a longer concession for DP World will bolster stability at Nhava Sheva, particularly in light of increasing competition from new private ports and terminals. As container volumes in India are anticipated to rise steadily, decision-makers are focused on ensuring capacity readiness and preventing operational disruptions.
Moreover, the potential for early expansion by global competitors signals a pivotal moment for India’s rapidly developing port sector. A formal announcement from JNPA or the Ministry of Harbor and Waterways is expected soon.
