The Indian Maritime University (IMU) in Kolkata celebrated the inauguration of the Dr. Ravi K Mehrotra Excellence Center in Sea Traffic (CoEM) on July 18, 2025. This center represents a pivotal advancement in the university’s commitment to innovation, research, and excellence in maritime education, backed by alumni and industry partners.
Established through a partnership with Dr. Ravi K Mehrotra, a distinguished alumnus and founder of the Foresight Group, the center aims to enhance maritime excellence and industry collaboration. A formal agreement between IMU and RK Mehrotra Holdings Limited (RKMHL) was signed on August 5, 2024, securing a $20 million investment over five years and covering the construction of a 5,500-square-meter facility.
The inauguration included notable figures from the maritime sector, including IMU’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. Malini V. Shankar, and various alumni and industry leaders. The CoEM is dedicated to promoting research in maritime technology and practices, offering advanced training, and establishing partnerships with shipping companies and ports.
With plans for future research on alternative fuels and AI integration in maritime operations, CoEM is poised to become a nexus for knowledge and innovation, shaping the future of India’s maritime sector.
