Kochi, known as the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea,’ has recently garnered international attention for its innovative Water Metro system, which features solar-powered metro boats navigating the city’s waterways. This sustainable public transport initiative has not only improved travel efficiency but also showcased a commitment to eco-friendly practices. Recently, the Kochi Water Metro earned a commendation at the 2026 Global Sustainable Transport Awards, finishing among the top three projects globally, despite narrowly missing the top prize.
In this competition, Brazil’s Salvador city was awarded first place for its extensive electric bus rapid transit system, while Santiago, Chile, received special recognition for having the largest electric bus fleet in Latin America. The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) in New York highlighted Kochi’s innovative approach, which distinguishes it from traditional road and rail systems.
Kochi Water Metro connects ten islands, drastically reducing travel time from an hour by road to just 20 minutes by water, all at nearly half the cost. With a fleet of 20 electric-hybrid boats, it has transported over 6 million passengers, significantly reducing carbon emissions. Managing Director Lokanath Behra emphasized the need for further innovation, including the transition to hydrogen-powered boats, to maintain global competitiveness.
This recognition has sparked interest from other countries exploring similar water-based transport solutions, with inquiries already coming from Fiji. As Kochi continues to lead in sustainable urban transport, it sets a benchmark for water-rich cities worldwide, supported by ongoing partnerships with organizations like the World Bank.
