Innovative Subsea Operation Advances CO₂ Storage in the North Sea

Boskalis’ diving support vessel, BOKA Da Vinci, has successfully completed a specialized subsea operation in the northern North Sea, contributing vital infrastructure for an INEOS-led carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative at the Nini oil and gas field off the coast of Denmark. This effort is part of Project Greensand, which aims to facilitate CO₂ storage in the region.

During the project, Boskalis Subsea Services utilized saturation divers and a remotely operated vehicle to install a dynamic hose equipped with 49 buoyancy modules on the seabed within a month. Following the installation of the dynamic hose, the team meticulously positioned a pipeline end manifold and installed a static hose in two segments, finalizing the essential subsea components.

The newly established subsea configuration will allow CO₂ captured onshore to be transported via a dedicated bulk carrier to the Nini field, where it will connect to the dynamic hose installed by Boskalis. This hose-and-manifold system will enable the injection of CO₂ into the depleted field for long-term storage, aligning with Denmark’s ambitions for full-scale offshore CO₂ storage under Project Greensand.

Boskalis emphasized that this operation highlights how its extensive expertise in subsea decommissioning, inspection, repair, and maintenance can be adapted to support the development of CCS and energy-transition infrastructure in the North Sea.
