Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has revealed ambitious plans for capacity expansion at Kandla Port, with investments totaling over Rs 57,000 crore. This includes a new mega shipbuilding project costing Rs 30,000 Crores and a new cargo terminal outside Kandla Creek with an investment of Rs 27,000 Crores, aimed at expanding the port by an extra 135 MTPA. Sonowal highlighted that these initiatives align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India, make for the World’ vision, driving economic growth and job creation in the region.
The new mega shipbuilding facility at Kandla Port will bolster the country’s shipbuilding capabilities by focusing on manufacturing large vessels like Very Large Crude Carriers. With the capacity to produce 32 new ships and repair 50 annually, the facility spans over 8,000 hectares and includes various components like a marina and industrial cluster. This strategic project is set to unlock significant commercial value and job opportunities in the region, further establishing Kandla Port as a key maritime hub.
Additionally, efforts to restructure Kandla Port involve the development of a state-of-the-art port outside Kandla Creek towards Tuna, leveraging the available waterfront to accommodate an added capacity of 135 MTPA with an investment of ₹27,000 crores. The new port will optimize cargo handling, transitioning existing berths for dry bulk cargo handling, and facilitating smooth liquid cargo operations. These developments aim to enhance operational efficiency, reduce waiting times, and offer improved infrastructure for larger vessels, ultimately strengthening Kandla Port’s competitiveness in the global shipping arena.
