In a move towards promoting green energy and achieving the goals of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal oversaw the manufacturing of an electrolyzer by L&T for a 1 MW Green hydrogen plant at DEENDAYAL Port Authority, Kandla. This initiative falls under the “make-in-India” scheme and aims to establish Kandla Port as a green hydrogen hub, with plans to scale up the capacity to 10 MW in the future. The main objective is to provide hands-on experience to engineers and technicians in producing, storing, and handling green hydrogen.

Known for its expertise in the green hydrogen sector, L&T successfully produced the 1-MW electrolyzer within a record time of three months. Electrolyzers are crucial components in green hydrogen systems as they play a central role in hydrogen production. The electrolyzers will soon be assembled on site at Kandla, with the green hydrogen system expected to be fully operational by July 2025. The estimated production capacity is 18 kg of green hydrogen per hour, equivalent to approximately 80-90 tons per year.

This development makes DPA Kandla the first port in India to have an operational green hydrogen system within its premises using locally produced electrolyzers. The green hydrogen generated will be utilized to produce clean energy through fuel cells, paving the way for sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions at the harbor. Additionally, DPA has plans to integrate green ammonia production by incorporating necessary modules in the system. The news of L&T-made electrolyzers for Kandla Port was first reported on Maritime Gateway, a prominent portal in South Asia.
