On January 27, Vijay Kumar, IAS, Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, visited Chennai Port to review operational performance and development plans aligned with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. During his visit, Kumar inaugurated and laid foundation stones for four infrastructure projects totaling ₹54.27 crore. Key projects included a new passenger terminal for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and an indigenous Vessel Traffic Monitoring System. These initiatives aim to enhance coastal connectivity, improve vessel traffic management, and modernize port infrastructure.
Kumar engaged in discussions with S. Viswanathan, IAS, Chairperson of the Chennai Port Authority, and senior officials to assess cargo performance and ongoing projects under Maritime India Vision 2030. Focus areas included operational efficiency, asset utilization, and the implementation of the Port Master Plan to solidify Chennai Port’s position as a vital gateway on India’s east coast.
Additionally, Kumar inspected critical facilities and chaired a stakeholder meeting with shipping lines and port users. He shared insights on recent government policy initiatives and solicited feedback on improving the ease of doing business. The Chennai Port Authority is committed to evolving into a modern, efficient port, significantly contributing to India’s maritime growth.
