MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, the largest container carrier globally, plans to register a fleet of vessels under the Indian flag. This strategic decision supports India’s aim to enhance its domestic maritime industry, following similar moves by CMA CGM and Maersk, who have adapted to India’s new maritime regulations designed to increase trade on Indian-registered vessels.
During the India Maritime Week 2025, MSC CEO Soren Toft emphasized the importance of India to the company, announcing the commitment to deploy 12 vessels under the Indian flag. He noted the ongoing potential for growth in India’s shipping, ports, and logistics sectors, reinforcing MSC’s long-term partnership with the country.
The Indian government is actively promoting domestic shipping with financial incentives for shipbuilding and stricter regulations governing inter-port container movement. This includes updated vessel age norms that encourage earlier registry transfers, contributing to notable growth in India’s containership registry.
As MSC joins the ranks of CMA CGM and Maersk, which have already reflagged vessels, it is set to become India’s third-largest private shipowner. Additionally, the state-run Shipping Corporation of India is expanding through acquisitions, signifying a robust commitment to strengthening India’s maritime sector.
