The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) has been honored for the eighth time by the Greentech Foundation, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable development and eco-friendly operations. The NMPA secured the prestigious Greentech 24 Global Environment Award 2025 in the environmental protection category during the summit held in New Delhi from June 12 to 13, 2025. This recognition highlights the efforts of the port’s team, led by Chairman Dr. AV Ramana, in implementing green initiatives.
Key achievements contributing to this accolade include the installation of a 5.3 MW solar power plant, making the port fully operational on solar energy. Additionally, the construction of three rainwater reservoirs has ensured water self-sufficiency and aided over 500 nearby villages. The port also embraced a significant Green Belt Development project, planting 7,700 seedlings in the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
NMPA has adopted comprehensive waste management practices and introduced electric and CNG vehicles to reduce emissions. Furthermore, 95% of lighting at the port now utilizes energy-efficient LEDs, with 55% of operations mechanized to lower energy consumption. These initiatives align with the Ministry for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways’ vision of transforming Indian ports into green hubs, inspiring the maritime sector to adopt sustainable practices.
