Patna is set to launch its first electric water metro service later this year, joining cities like Mumbai and Goa in modernizing urban water transport. The 21-kilometer corridor will connect Digha Ghat and Kangan Ghat, with stops at key locations like Gandhi Ghat and Gaya Ghat. This service aims to reduce congestion, lower emissions, and enhance tourism along the Ganga River.
The fleet will comprise eco-friendly, air-conditioned boats, each accommodating 50 seated passengers and 25 standing. With large windows for scenic views, these vessels will offer both practical transportation and a leisure experience. Officials have highlighted that the electric propulsion system will significantly diminish air and noise pollution.
Developed at a cost of ₹908 crore through a partnership between the Inland Waterways Authority of India and the Government of Bihar, the project will be managed by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation. It includes plans for modern terminals to facilitate seamless transfers between boats, buses, and other transport services.
The recent arrival of the MV Gomadharkuwar vessel at Gaya Ghat signals progress, with operations expected to start around Dussehra. The water metro is anticipated to transform Patna’s identity as a riverfront capital while providing safe, eco-friendly travel options on the Ganga.
