India’s Knowledge Marine and Engineering Works (KMEW) has recently secured a significant contract with the Visakhapatnam Port Authority. The 15-year deal, valued at approximately INR 3.84 billion (around $45.5 million), focuses on the operation and management of a battery-powered tugboat.

As part of this agreement, KMEW will oversee various aspects of the tug’s functionality, including manning, operation, maintenance, and comprehensive technical management. This ensures that the vessel operates efficiently and safely over the duration of the contract.

The tugboat is equipped with advanced battery operating systems aimed at achieving zero local-emission operations. This aligns perfectly with India’s initiative to transition towards more environmentally-friendly maritime solutions under its “green tug” transition programme (GTTP).
