The Vizhinjam International Seaport has received approval from the Union Environment Ministry for its next two development phases, according to Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. This milestone will ensure that the port is completed by 2028, ahead of schedule, creating new opportunities for maritime trade and industrial growth. The port, located in Kerala, is India’s first deep-water container conversion port developed by Adani Group’s company, Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd.

In July 2024, the first mother ship, MV San Fernando, marked the beginning of operations at the Deepwater Container Transshipment Port in Vizhinjam, the first of its kind in India. This automated port boasts state-of-the-art technology enabling large-scale automation for efficient shipping and handling of mega max container ships. Upon completion, the port’s handling capacity will increase to 30 lakh teus, positioning it as a key player in the global trade network.

The Vizhinjam Seaport, situated near the popular Kovalam beach, boasts water connectivity to various regional and international ports, making it a crucial trade hub. Constructed in 2016 through a public-private partnership, the project was awarded to APSEZ, part of the Adani Group, known for its diversified operations in sectors including ports, airports, cement, and solar power projects. The group operates strategically located ports on both the East and West coasts of India, accounting for a significant portion of the country’s total port volume. Additionally, Adani Group has presence in other countries with envelope ports operations in Colombo, Haifa, and Dar es Salaam.
