The Gateway freight operations at Vizhinjam International Seaport are now set to commence between December 2025 and January 2026 due to ongoing construction of temporary road access to NH-66. This timing aligns with the port’s first full year of commercial activity, as Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd. aims to coordinate infrastructure preparations. Initially, freight movement will increase gradually instead of starting at full capacity.
Since its commercial opening in July 2024, Vizhinjam port has primarily functioned as a transshipment hub. A significant enhancement for trade is the implementation of EXIM freight handling services. However, the completion of a 1.7 km temporary road connecting the port to NH-66 is critical for smooth container truck traffic and to alleviate congestion. Despite earlier assurances from Hafenminister VN Vasavan about starting services by July 2025, state government delays have slowed progress.
The ongoing monsoon has hindered construction, particularly a 150-meter section needing a retaining wall. Meanwhile, customs facilities and a freight scanner are operational. A pending approval for a proposed cloverleaf interchange at the NH-66 junction remains incomplete, awaiting decisions from the state government, although initial approvals have been granted.
The estimated ₹360 billion cloverleaf project, potentially co-funded by the Adani Group and the state, would cover 30 hectares. Until its completion, the temporary route will support gradual increases in freight activities.
