Amon Maritime from Norway has launched a new company, Amon Bulk, to develop ammonia-fueled bulk carriers, supported by a NOK253 million ($25 million) grant from Enova, an energy transition agency. The initiative will focus on two vessel types: capesize and kamsarmax, which are well-suited for ammonia adoption due to their high fuel consumption and established routes for industrial clients with climate goals.
The new vessels, Amon Bulk 1 and Amon Bulk 2, are expected to be operational by 2029, marking them as some of the first large ammonia-powered bulk carriers globally. CEO André Risholm emphasized that this venture represents a crucial step towards decarbonizing deep-sea bulk shipping.
Amon Maritime has a history of ammonia-powered projects, including gas carriers and offshore support. This initiative aligns with Enova’s broader NOK763 million investment in ammonia and hydrogen-powered shipping, which also supports hydrogen vessel projects by LH2 Shipping and Møre Sjø.
Nils Kristian Nakstad, managing director of Enova, highlighted the importance of supporting the industry to build experience with new technologies, stating that scalable solutions are essential for reducing emissions in ocean transportation by 2050.
