Recent research by ABS explores ammonia’s behavior in machine rooms and its release during bunkering operations, focusing on critical safety issues that arise as ammonia could become a prevalent marine fuel. The study, titled Security Insights for Ammonia as a Sea Fuel, analyzes ammonia performance on ships through advanced simulations using computer fluid dynamics (CFD).

ABS engineers investigated various scenarios, including ship-to-ship transfers and leaks from engine compartments, to quantify risks associated with ammonia dispersion. Their work emphasizes the importance of understanding these risks to ensure safety during the transition to ammonia as a cleaner fuel source.

In addition to CFD analyses, the research highlights best practices in the industry, incorporating advanced tools such as acoustic cameras for leak detection. The framework proposed for owners and operators includes proactive regulatory commitments, a comprehensive security strategy that combines both qualitative and quantitative risk assessments, and real-time monitoring systems to enhance emergency responses.
