Australia is preparing for an unprecedented summer marked by marine heatwaves while still recovering from significant coral bleaching incidents affecting Western Australia, the Great Barrier Reef, and South Australia’s dive industry, which is currently dealing with harmful algal blooms. Divers from across the nation, having witnessed these changes firsthand, are uniting to raise awareness and take action.

The non-profit organization Divers for Climate is set to unveil findings from the first national survey of divers’ experiences with climate change, conducted by researchers from various universities. This survey reveals that 91% of divers have directly felt the impacts of climate change, including coral bleaching and rising water temperatures. Many divers reported adverse effects on their emotional and financial well-being, with half indicating that their income or property has been affected.

Dr. Yolanda Waters, CEO of Divers for Climate, emphasizes the importance of solidarity in the diving community as they face these challenges. The upcoming Summer of Solidarity campaign aims to convert survey insights into actionable steps, amplifying divers’ voices through events and storytelling. The campaign will culminate in a Snorkel Out for Climate celebration during Sydney Climate Action Week, seeking to gather support for stronger climate policies.

The campaign will kick off with an online forum featuring renowned cave diver Dr. Richard Harris as the keynote speaker. Participants are encouraged to engage by signing a National Statement, donating, or sharing their personal stories related to climate impacts.
