Belgian shipowner Exmar has launched two ocean-going ammonia dual-fuel midsize gas carriers, ANTWERPEN and ARLON, touted as the world’s first vessels of their kind. This achievement marks a significant step toward low-emission shipping. Constructed in South Korea in partnership with HD Hyundai, the ships have a cargo capacity of approximately 46,000 cubic meters, featuring 45,000 cubic meter cargo tanks and two 500 cubic meter deck tanks.
The vessels are designed with an extended hull and increased beam to enhance cargo intake compared to standard carriers. Their ammonia dual-fuel propulsion systems can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% during navigation, while also allowing the cargo to serve as fuel. Exmar collaborated with several partners, including Wärtsilä Gas Solutions and WinGD, to rigorously test these propulsion systems.
The company worked closely with regulators and classification bodies to develop guidelines for using ammonia as fuel on gas carriers under the International Maritime Organization framework. Safety features were integrated into the design based on risk assessments and technical reviews, with input from seafarers. This milestone underscores Exmar’s commitment to exploring alternative fuels in the shipping industry to minimize emissions.
