A bulkhead named Anima Saima 2 capsized in the Karnaphuli River near the Chattogram port channel after colliding with the outbound container vessel MSC Giannina II. The incident took place between the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) and Gupta Bend point. Three crew members from the sunken bulkhead were rescued by the Chattogram Port Authority’s tugboat Kandari-1. The wreckage has been located and marked with a red buoy, with a speedboat stationed at the site for navigation assistance.
Despite the collision, vessel movements in the port channel have been unaffected, with 12 ships entering and exiting as scheduled since the morning. The Chattogram Port Authority has issued a notice to mariners, advising caution when navigating near the wreck site. Additionally, the authority has instructed the MSC Giannina II to anchor at the outer harbor and provide a detailed statement regarding the incident.
The CPA’s prompt response to the situation has ensured the safety of the crew and the smooth operation of vessel traffic in the port channel. By marking the wreckage and providing navigation assistance, they have taken necessary steps to prevent any further incidents. The investigation into the collision will continue, with the MSC Giannina II being asked to cooperate by providing a statement detailing the events leading up to the collision.
