Reports from Bangladesh detail a “brutal robbery” aboard the cargo ship Shejyoti, anchored at the Mongla port. In the early hours of May 26, an organized gang of 14 armed robbers boarded the vessel, tying up the crew and stealing significant amounts of fuel and equipment, resulting in injuries to three crewmembers who required First Aid.

The Shejyoti, owned by PNN Shipping Lines, has been docked since June 2024 due to mechanical issues and has a crew of seven. The robbers, equipped with locally made weapons, looted the ship of approximately $40,000 in fuel and $18,000 in equipment, along with personal belongings, including seven mobile phones.

This incident marks the third attack on the Shejyoti in the Mongla Port channel. Previous reports indicate a rise in such incidents, with the Bangladesh Coast Guard recently apprehending a gang preparing to rob another vessel. In 2022, they arrested individuals involved in a similar robbery of a Liberian-flagged cargo ship, highlighting ongoing security concerns at the port.
