ClassNK has introduced new guidelines aimed at improving the efficiency and safety of container shipping. These guidelines focus on optimizing container stowage while preventing cargo collapse, utilizing advancements in weather forecasting, ship motion analysis, and digital twin technologies. The key documents include the ‘Guidelines for the Safety of Maritime Cargo Based on Weather Forecasts,’ ‘Guidelines for Anti-Rolling Devices,’ and ‘Guidelines for Container Stowage and Securing Arrangements (Edition 3.3).’

The ‘Guidelines for the Safety of Maritime Cargo Based on Weather Forecasts’ emphasize the importance of route selection informed by metocean data. They address the uncertainties inherent in weather forecasts, which have historically lacked standardized approaches. By analyzing over a million AIS records and past metocean data, these guidelines establish new technical requirements for evaluating weather forecast reliability and cargo safety, facilitating optimized stowage operations during short voyages.

The ‘Guidelines for Anti-Rolling Devices’ detail technical and inspection standards for devices like anti-rolling tanks, which are increasingly installed on cargo ships to enhance safety and reduce rolling. These guidelines also provide methods to assess the effectiveness of such devices in mitigating roll motion, thereby supporting safer stowage practices.

Lastly, the revised ‘Guidelines for Container Stowage and Securing Arrangements’ build on previous editions to incorporate the latest insights from weather and anti-rolling device guidelines. These resources are available for download on ClassNK’s website, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to promoting safe and efficient shipping practices across various operational conditions.
