ClassNK has released new guidelines titled “Guidelines for the Safe Operation of Ammonia-Driven Ships” aimed at ensuring the safe navigation of ammonia-fueled vessels. These guidelines emphasize the protection of crew members and outline essential practices for daily operations, such as responding to ammonia leaks and identifying necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency tools.
As the shipping industry pivots toward decarbonization, nearly 40% of new ship orders are now for alternative fuel vessels, highlighting the growing trend. However, ammonia, while a promising alternative, carries unique risks that differ from traditional heavy fuels, leading to a notable knowledge gap among operators of such vessels.
To bridge this gap, ClassNK has incorporated insights from both Japan and international sources, covering essential topics from transport and storage protocols to operational best practices tailored for crews operating ammonia-driven ships. The guidelines offer practical, immediately applicable advice.
ClassNK is committed to supporting the maritime industry’s transition to zero emissions, promoting safe operations while facilitating the introduction of alternative fuel ships across the sector. Ongoing discussions and research will ensure these guidelines remain updated and relevant.
