KUCHING: Sarawak is advancing its clean energy and environmental sustainability initiatives, with the state government seeking new partnerships to reduce methane emissions and enhance maritime operations. Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, emphasized the importance of strategic collaborations that are grounded in science and aligned with the state’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
During a recent visit from representatives of the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Dr Hazland highlighted the need for data-driven solutions and effective inter-agency coordination. The delegation, led by EDF’s Dr Shareen Yawanarajah and Swinburne Sarawak’s Professor Ir Dr Basil Wong, proposed ideas aimed at reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector and promoting maritime decarbonization.
Dr Hazland indicated that the Ministry would review these initiatives upon receiving detailed submissions, followed by discussions with relevant state agencies. This potential collaboration reflects Sarawak’s commitment to not only meet international climate goals but also to set a benchmark in sustainable practices within the oil and gas industry and maritime sector. The partnership with EDF and Swinburne aims to leverage expertise for measurable outcomes in the state’s energy and environmental sectors.
