Swedish forest company SCA has partnered with Nordic energy firm Gasum to utilize its liquefied biogas pooling service, aiming to comply with EU maritime emissions regulations. This collaboration aligns with SCA’s long-term goal of cutting emissions by 50% by 2030, based on 2019 levels. SCA operates a fleet of three roll-on/roll-off vessels that transport products to European ports and provide services to external customers.

Transportation is the largest source of fossil emissions for SCA, prompting the company to choose Gasum’s pooling service to lower the carbon intensity of its fleet’s fuel. Jacob Granqvist, Vice President of Maritime at Gasum, expressed enthusiasm for SCA’s participation, highlighting the joint effort to reduce maritime carbon emissions and support sustainability goals through an efficient emissions reduction service.

Gasum employs waste-based liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) in dual-fuel vessels, which can achieve up to 90% lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels. The FuelEU Maritime regulation, effective from January 1, 2025, requires vessel owners to reduce fuel carbon intensity, starting with a 2% cut and escalating to 80% by 2050. Gasum utilizes DNV technology for monitoring fuel consumption and emissions, ensuring compliance for its pooling customers.
