A container vessel was hit by an unidentified projectile in the Gulf, approximately 25 nautical miles south of Iran’s Kish Island. The incident resulted in damage above the waterline, but fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the crew, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Center.
UKMTO, which monitors maritime security in the region, confirmed that the crew is safe and accounted for, and there have been no reports of environmental damage. Authorities are currently investigating the incident. This attack adds to a series of recent strikes and near-misses involving commercial vessels in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and container shipping.
While the vessel’s identity has not been officially confirmed, industry sources speculate it may be the 4,250-TEU Qingdao Star, a container ship flagged in the Marshall Islands that has previously been mentioned in Iranian claims of attacks on maritime traffic in the area. These claims remain unverified.
Earlier this week, another container ship reported projectiles landing nearby at the UAE port of Khor Fakkan. Additionally, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has claimed responsibility for other strikes, although these assertions could not be independently substantiated.
