DNV has introduced the first public tender portal for e-methanol procurement in the European Union and the United Kingdom. This initiative aims to connect industrial offtakers with a European producer to enhance the availability of this low-carbon fuel, essential for maritime transport and heavy industry. As demand for clean energy carriers rises, e-methanol offers a way to decarbonize sectors that are difficult to transition, aligning with key European regulations like RED III and Fit for 55.

As various EU nations, including Germany, Spain, France, and Belgium, push for stricter blending mandates for renewable fuels, they are often setting targets that surpass European Union requirements. This shift is driven by limited biofuel feedstocks and increasing prices, thereby highlighting a pressing need for alternative renewable solutions. Nonetheless, the challenge remains to procure a reliable and verifiable supply of these fuels.

Santiago Blanco, Vice-President and Regional Director at DNV, emphasized that while technologies are available, market mechanisms to effectively scale e-methanol are still evolving. The tender’s two-phase process begins with a non-binding qualification to identify serious potential offtakers, followed by negotiations with the selected producer. The product will comply with all necessary regulations starting from the project’s inception, with delivery expected in the latter half of 2028.

This tender invites industrial users, maritime operators, traders, and organizations committed to net-zero goals and sustainable sourcing. By streamlining the procurement process, DNV aims to translate ambition into actionable supply agreements, thereby expediting the transition to cleaner fuels in Europe.
