The 2025 Genoa International Boat Show unveiled insights from a study by the National Nautical Observatory, highlighting the demographics of Italian boat owners. Presented by Roberto Neglia, the analysis delved into factors influencing the boating and tourism sectors, examining variables such as gender, geographical location, boat size, and age. Notably, the Italian boating industry achieved a record turnover of €8.6 billion in 2024, as reported during the show.

The findings revealed that 80% of boat owners are over 50, with a significant portion aged between 60 and 75. Women account for 13% of ownership, a figure that is gradually rising, and they tend to be younger than their male counterparts, who dominate the statistics at 87%. The study also noted that ownership is concentrated in urban centers, particularly Rome and Milan, with typical vessels being inboard-powered boats measuring 10-12 meters, built between 2000 and 2009.

Interestingly, the research showed that boating ownership is not solely income-dependent. While there is a noticeable distinction between owners above and below 50, comparisons with executive salary data revealed no direct correlation between income and boat ownership. The geographical distribution of owners is fairly balanced across Italy, with major cities accounting for a significant share of ownership.
