Germany’s first fully electric seagoing vessel, the E-Kat catamaran ferry, has successfully completed its acceptance trials and is set to be deployed. Designed and built by Damen Group, the vessel was launched in the Netherlands and has undergone testing to ensure it meets all necessary requirements for operation. With a capacity for up to 150 passengers and a payload of 11,250 kg, the E-Kat will operate at speeds of up to 16 knots, significantly reducing travel time between Norddeich and Norderney.

The E-Kat’s battery power system, with a maximum capacity of 1,800 kW, has been installed along with the necessary charging infrastructure. The ferry will be recharged using shore power connections in approximately 28 minutes, providing enough power for a round trip between the port and the island, which is approximately 11 km apart. The propulsion system includes two 600 kW electric motors and two 75 kW electric bow thrusters, ensuring efficient and environmentally friendly operation.

AG Reederei Norden-Frisia, the owner of the E-Kat, has emphasized their commitment to creating a closed cycle of electricity production and consumption. They have already installed photovoltaic systems at their buildings in the port and on the island, as well as providing charging stations for electric vehicles. The E-Kat represents a significant step forward in the use of electric power in maritime transportation, showcasing the growing opportunities for sustainable and efficient vessels in the industry.
