PowerCell, a Swedish fuel cell company, has secured a contract worth over SEK 40 million ($4.25 million) to supply two groundbreaking hydrogen-powered bulk carriers with zero-emission propulsion systems. The contract entails delivering 14 Marine System 225 units between 2026 and 2027, which will collectively generate over 3 MW. Each carrier will utilize seven of these systems, enabling them to operate entirely on renewable hydrogen rather than fossil fuels.

The ships are being developed by GMI Rederi, with plans for them to enter service in 2027. These vessels will make history as the first bulk carriers globally to be powered by hydrogen.
