Fortescue’s Green Pioneer has docked in Belém, Brazil, sending a strong message to COP30 attendees: collaboration between industry and regulators is essential for achieving zero-emission shipping. This 75-meter vessel has traveled to three continents this year, with previous stops in London, Rotterdam, Monaco, Boston, and New York.
During its journey, the Green Pioneer made history as the first vessel to navigate on ammonia in international waters, following successful refueling operations in the UK, Rotterdam, and Boston. Its innovative efforts earned it recognition as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025.
The shipping industry currently contributes 3% of global emissions, a figure projected to rise to 10% by 2040. Fortescue expresses disappointment over delays in adopting the International Maritime Organization’s Net-Zero Framework, which aimed to guide global shipping toward decarbonization. Despite some countries stalling progress, the transition to zero-emission fuels is inevitable.
At COP30, the Green Pioneer demonstrates that the necessary technologies for sustainable shipping are already available. Fortescue remains dedicated to showcasing the potential of green shipping through its ongoing initiatives.
