The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has convened an Extraordinary Council meeting to address the situation in the Middle East, particularly its effects on shipping and seafarers in the Arabian Sea, Sea of Oman, and the Gulf region, especially around the Strait of Hormuz. This session is scheduled for March 18-19 at the IMO headquarters in London and will be chaired by Victor Jiménez from Spain.
The meeting, designated as Extraordinary Session (C/ES.36), was prompted by requests from several Council Members concerned about recent developments.
To prepare for the session, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez held briefings with industry organizations on March 11 and with Member States on March 12 to share insights and discuss the evolving situation.
The IMO Council, which serves as the organization’s executive body, comprises 40 Member States elected by the IMO Assembly. This meeting underscores the importance of addressing maritime safety and security in a region pivotal for global shipping.
