International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has outlined key priorities for 2026 in a recent video message. He emphasized the theme of “From Policy to Practice – Powering Maritime Excellence,” focusing on the importance of transitioning from plans to actionable steps and measurable outcomes.
Dominguez highlighted the need for updated training for nearly two million seafarers, noting a major revision of the STCW Convention will address emerging technologies, new fuels, and evolving industry requirements. This update aims to ensure that training remains relevant in a rapidly changing maritime landscape.
On the topic of sustainability, Dominguez reaffirmed the IMO’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime sector by 2050. He also mentioned the finalization of the autonomous ships code, which is expected to attract significant attention as technology advances.
Additionally, the IMO will support the implementation of the High Seas Treaty, which takes effect this month, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to ocean protection and biodiversity. Dominguez concluded by wishing everyone a successful 2026 and encouraged viewers to check out the new IMO logo.
