India Pledges $680 Million to Strengthen Mauritius Maritime Security

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of a free and secure Indian Ocean during his meeting with Mauritian Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Varanasi. Modi launched a $680 million development package aimed at enhancing bilateral ties, which he described as a familial bond rooted in shared cultural heritage.

The package includes significant projects in health, infrastructure, and energy, funded by $215 million in direct grants and $440 million in grant-cum-line credit. Key initiatives involve constructing a 500-bed hospital, an AYUSH Centre of Excellence, and a veterinary school, along with support for road expansions and airport upgrades.

Modi characterized the package as an “investment in our shared future,” highlighting cooperation in clean energy, including the provision of 100 electric buses and a floating solar power plant. India will also provide $25 million in budgetary support to Mauritius this fiscal year.

On the strategic front, Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to being a security provider in the region, signing a hydrographic cooperation agreement and pledging support for Mauritius’ Exclusive Economic Zone. He hailed the conclusion of the Chagos Agreement as a historic milestone in decolonization, reinforcing India’s support for Mauritius.
