Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, and Nippon Gas Line (NGL) have received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for a low-pressure type liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carrier designed for coastal transportation. This certification comes as the demand for LCO2 carriers is expected to increase due to carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) projects involving the marine transport of CO2 captured in Japan to storage sites.
The AiP was granted to Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and NGL after a collaborative concept study on low-pressure type coastal LCO2 carriers. These carriers are envisioned for transporting CO2 from small-scale capture sites, primarily in the Seto Inland Sea area, to base sites for onward transport to overseas storage facilities. The newly certified LCO2 carrier is a versatile small-sized vessel intended for domestic sea use.
The partnership between Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and NGL underscores their commitment to meeting the growing demand for LCO2 carriers in the context of advancing CCS projects in Japan. The AiP certification from ClassNK validates the feasibility and safety of the low-pressure type coastal LCO2 carrier design, positioning it as a reliable solution for transporting captured CO2 for storage purposes.
