The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has established a 12-member Shipbuilding Design Research Committee in response to recent Budget announcements aimed at supporting the shipbuilding industry. This committee is responsible for advising the government on the creation of a Shipbuilding Design and Research Centre, as well as the National Shipbuilding Mission. The panel, headed by the Additional Secretary of MoPSW, includes key figures such as Joint Secretaries from both the Shipping and Ports departments, along with representatives from organizations like the Ministry of Defence, Cochin Shipyard Ltd, and the Indian Maritime University.

The committee is also composed of members from the Shipyards Association of India (SAI) and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) to ensure a diverse range of perspectives. The panel will be convened by the Director of Shipbuilding Research at MoPSW, according to an order issued by the ministry on February 24, 2025. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to strengthen and advance the shipbuilding sector in India, in line with the government’s focus on boosting the maritime industry as a whole.

The establishment of this committee marks a significant step towards achieving the goals outlined in the Budget, with a specific emphasis on enhancing research and development capabilities within the shipbuilding sector.
