In a recent webinar hosted by the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, maritime leaders endorsed the International Maritime Organization’s Day of the Seafarer initiative, focusing on the theme “My Harassment-Free Ship.” The discussion highlighted the unacceptability of bullying and harassment at sea and explored strategies to foster a positive culture within the industry.

Moderated by Sean Moloney, the panel included notable figures such as Captain Steven Spence and Dr. Carolyn Graham. They emphasized the interconnectedness of safety and bullying, arguing that mental health and “soft skills” are often overlooked in safety discussions. Dr. Graham pointed out that seafarers frequently feel unable to voice their concerns about bullying, while Georgia Allen from ISWAN reported over 100 calls from seafarers facing mental health issues linked to harassment.

The panel criticized the lack of effective complaint systems for seafarers and called for greater awareness of support mechanisms. Captain Spence noted that the Maritime Authority of Jamaica has established a confidential reporting system for seafarers. Ultimately, the initiative aims to promote a safe and respectful working environment for all maritime personnel, regardless of their background. Captain Szymanski urged individuals and organizations to take personal responsibility in addressing these issues.
