Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) are collaborating on an innovative liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, recently receiving Approval in Principle from Lloyd’s Register. This advanced vessel, with a capacity of 174,000 cbm, will utilize a 300kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system from Bloom Energy.

Unveiled at Norshipping 2025 in Norway, this ship, set for delivery in 2027, marks a significant advancement in fuel cell technology for maritime applications. By employing SOFCs, the vessel aims to significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce harmful pollutants such as NOx, SOx, and methane slip, aligning with global efforts toward maritime decarbonization.

This initiative is part of MOL’s broader commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Development began in 2022, and as the delivery date approaches, the partners are planning joint equipment testing for 2027 to ensure optimal performance.

SOFCs offer a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional ship engines, and their adoption at sea could revolutionize the industry. This project represents a pivotal step towards integrating cutting-edge energy technology with the needs of commercial shipping, paving the way for sustainable maritime transport.
