The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA Singapore) has renewed its collaboration with DNV, a classification society based in Oslo, to enhance the development of a sustainable and innovative maritime sector. This renewed partnership, announced on November 10, aims to strengthen efforts in maritime sustainability, digital innovation, and talent development. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed during a Singapore-Norway conference.

Under this agreement, MPA and DNV will collaborate on research and development (R&D), innovation, and test-bedding projects. These initiatives will include joint industry efforts focused on remote vessel operations, engaging local maritime communities, and partnering with educational and research institutions. A key emphasis will be placed on accelerating the adoption of zero- and near-zero-emission fuels, supporting decarbonization technologies, and advancing smart ship systems.

Additionally, both organizations will work together on industry training and talent development through initiatives like the Maritime Innovation Committee, PIER71, and the Smart Port Challenge. This collaborative effort aims to cultivate the next generation of maritime professionals in Singapore. The renewed MoU follows previous agreements established in 2014 and 2019, underscoring the long-term commitment between MPA and DNV.

Furthermore, DNV’s initiatives in Singapore extend beyond this partnership, as evidenced by a recent MoU with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). This agreement aims to explore opportunities in maritime education, applied research, and innovation, particularly in the realms of decarbonization, digitalization, and talent development, building on a relationship initiated in 2022.
