The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved the formation of Colombo Eastern Container Terminal (Private) Limited, a limited liability company tasked with managing the Eastern Container Terminal (ECT) at Colombo Port. This decision follows the February 2021 initiative to further develop the Eastern and Western terminals as part of the Colombo South Port Project.

The new entity aims to enhance economic returns, boost operational efficiency, and ensure competitive practices against private terminal operators. Notably, the company will remain entirely under the ownership of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).

The Cabinet’s recent endorsement of this company, proposed by the Minister of Ports, marks a strategic move to strengthen the country’s port operations and maintain its competitive edge in the shipping industry.
