An oil tanker leased by state-owned QatarEnergy was struck by an Iranian cruise missile on Wednesday while operating in Qatari waters, according to the defense ministry. This incident marks a significant escalation in regional tensions.
The attack involved three cruise missiles launched from Iran, of which two were successfully intercepted by defense systems. However, the third missile impacted the fuel oil tanker, named Aqua 1. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties from the incident.
The Aqua 1 was positioned approximately 17 nautical miles (31 kilometers) north of Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial hub, home to the world’s largest gas processing facility. While the tanker sustained damage above the waterline, authorities, including the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and QatarEnergy, confirmed that there was no environmental impact resulting from the strike.
This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region, particularly concerning maritime safety and the potential for further escalations in hostilities.
