Rolls-Royce has achieved a significant milestone by testing the world’s first high-speed marine engine powered exclusively by methanol at its Friedrichshafen facility. This development, part of the meOHmare research project, aims to create climate-neutral propulsion solutions for shipping. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and involves collaboration with injection system expert Woodward L’Orange and the WTZ Roßlau research center, with a target to design a CO2-neutral marine engine by 2025.

Methanol presents unique engineering challenges, requiring new injection technologies since it does not ignite spontaneously like diesel. Dr. Johannes Kech, Head of Methanol Engine Development at Rolls-Royce, noted that they have redesigned various engine components and adapted testing infrastructure. Initial tests indicate the engine operates smoothly, paving the way for further refinements.

Denise Kurtulus, Senior Vice President Global Marine at Rolls-Royce, emphasized that this successful test positions green methanol as a viable future fuel, particularly for ferry, yacht, and supply vessel operators aiming to lower their carbon emissions. Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce is also developing a dual-fuel engine that can utilize both methanol and diesel as a transitional solution until green methanol becomes more accessible.
