A search operation is currently underway following the capsizing of a crew transfer vessel in the outer anchorage near Beira, Mozambique. Preliminary reports suggest that seven individuals are missing, while three others have sustained injuries, and some may have unfortunately succumbed after being retrieved from the water.
The vessel, which was transporting 21 people, was en route from the port to the Marshall Island-flagged product tanker Sea Quest when it overturned. Scorpio Marine Management, the tanker’s operator, confirmed that 14 of those aboard were crew members signing on to the Sea Quest. Of the total, ten people have been rescued, and three are receiving medical care on the tanker. However, there are concerns that some may not survive their injuries.
Currently, seven individuals remain unaccounted for, including five crew members, a technician, and another crew member. Various ships in the anchorage are assisting with the search efforts, and local maritime authorities have been alerted to the situation.
The Sea Quest, a 49,990 dwt product tanker built in 2012, was acquired by its current owners in 2024 and has been anchored since late last week after arriving from the UAE. Scorpio Marine Management is in communication with the families of those affected and has committed to a thorough investigation into the incident.
