ABS has granted approval in principle (AIP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) for a floating small modular reactor (SMR)-powered power module. This design aims to generate electricity offshore, catering to port facilities and nearby communities. The AIP follows thorough design reviews based on ABS’s guidelines for nuclear power systems in marine and offshore settings.
Patrick Ryan, Senior VP and CTO of ABS, emphasized the potential of floating nuclear facilities to enhance power supply for various applications, including industrial operations and data centers. He noted that modern nuclear technology presents a different risk profile compared to traditional reactors, making offshore applications more feasible.
An official from HD KSOE highlighted the floating nuclear plant’s role in advancing clean energy solutions, expressing commitment to developing the necessary technologies for its success. This AIP marks the second for HD KSOE’s floating nuclear power barge design and continues a longstanding collaboration with ABS on nuclear technology advancements.
