Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, praised a recent cabinet decision to endorse a series of strategic maritime agreements aimed at revitalizing the nation’s shipping sector and enhancing ties with Türkiye. This approval marks a significant step toward modernizing Somalia’s maritime governance.
The agreements include key international conventions such as the Maritime Labour Convention (2006), the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks (2007), and the International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships (1969). Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding between Somalia and Türkiye was established. Nur expressed his appreciation to the Council of Ministers for their support on social media platform X.
In outlining the ministry’s immediate objectives, Nur emphasized that collaboration with Türkiye and adherence to these international conventions will lead to modernization of ports, promotion of safe maritime trade, and protection of the marine environment. He also highlighted the importance of safeguarding the rights and welfare of seafarers.
A statement from the Ministry detailed specific goals, including enhancing maritime trade and vessel movement, improving port services, recognizing seafarer qualifications, and ensuring equitable trade facilitation and port services.
