On Sunday, Somalia, supported by the United Nations, celebrated the International Day for Women in Maritime, highlighting women’s crucial roles in the maritime sector. The event introduced a new initiative aimed at increasing female participation through education and job creation, addressing the significant gender-based barriers that Somali women face in maritime professions.

Fartun Abdukadir, Deputy Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, emphasized the government’s commitment to dismantling obstacles preventing women’s involvement in maritime activities and fostering leadership opportunities. This pledge builds on the 2023 Women in the Maritime Sector National Action Plan, which aims to expand opportunities for women in various maritime fields.

Despite Somalia’s extensive coastline—approximately 3,333 kilometers—female representation in the fishing industry remains low, with women owning only 4% to 5% of fishing boats, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation. The event also honored 23 women and one youth organization with Women in Maritime Awards, including Ikran Mohamed Abdulahi, who encouraged perseverance among attendees.

Globally, women comprise only 1.2% of the maritime workforce, highlighting the need for continued efforts to promote gender inclusivity. Nasrin Khan from the UN praised Somali women in maritime for their leadership and vision, stating they are not just participants but leaders in shaping Somalia’s maritime future.
