Consilium Safety Group and Hyundai Heavy Industries have entered into a memorandum of understanding to explore the integration of AI-powered cameras in fire alarm systems for maritime use. This partnership focuses on Hyundai’s HiCAMS technology, designed to detect smoke and flames through camera monitoring. While camera-based detection is gaining traction in various sectors, this initiative specifically targets the marine industry.
A pilot test is currently being conducted on the Sawasdee Sunrise vessel in Korea, where HiCAMS is linked to Consilium’s Safety Management Interface Graphics (SMiG) for smoke and flame detection. The initial applications are expected to be on container vessels, enhancing safety measures by monitoring cargo both below and above deck.
The next phase involves discussions with a classification society to secure an Approval in Principle (AIP), which would validate the technology’s suitability for fire alarm system certification. Thobias Ernfridsson, CTO of Consilium, emphasized the potential of combining traditional systems like Temperature Monitoring System (TMS) with advanced camera detection to improve safety in large, open spaces, where conventional smoke detectors may fall short. This innovation aims to provide earlier warnings and enhance maritime safety significantly.
