Vision Marine Technologies has submitted its 16th US patent application, focusing on an electronic reverse-thrust system tailored for electric marine outboards. Announced on May 21, 2026, this innovation enhances the E-Motion high-voltage electric outboard system by managing propulsion direction electronically, eliminating the need for traditional mechanical gear-shifting found in combustion engines. The design aims to simplify integration for manufacturers while ensuring compatibility with existing marine structures, thus avoiding the need for extensive redesigns in boat manufacturing.
The core principle of this patent is the ability of an electric motor to reverse direction without a gearbox. This advancement allows for a reduction in mechanical components, which simplifies the integration process and could enhance long-term serviceability for boat owners. Daniel Rathe, Chief Technology Officer, emphasized that electronic directional control opens avenues for simplifying marine architecture while maintaining the reliability expected by boaters.
In terms of performance, Vision Marine’s E-Motion 180E outboard, which delivers 180 horsepower, showcased its capabilities at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in August 2023. With professional racer Shaun Torrente at the helm, the outboard reached a remarkable speed of 116 mph, surpassing the previous year’s record. This achievement not only highlights the platform’s performance but also reinforces Vision Marine’s commitment to advancing electric marine technology.
